Beyond the MBA: Alumni Reflections on Growth, Alignment and Impact

by | Feb 12, 2026 | Fireside Chat

Last night, we had the privilege of hosting an inspiring alumni fireside chat that reminded us why community remains central to leadership formation.

Facilitated by Dewald Olivier the Chairperson of our Alumni Chapter, the conversation moved beyond job titles and milestones. It focused on journeys. Why pursue an MBA? What shifts along the way? What remains long after graduation?

The insights shared were both practical and profound.

Nasreen Rasool reflected on the importance of alignment within syndicate groups. An MBA is not a solo endeavour. It is a collective experience. Understanding where your group stands, what each member hopes to gain, and how you will work together is critical. Alignment builds trust, and trust builds performance.

Mayleen Venessa Kyster spoke about the stretch that defines the MBA journey. It demands resilience, discipline, and sacrifice. Having a strong support structure, whether family, colleagues, or peers, is essential. Leadership development does not happen in isolation. Her experience also affirmed how the MBA strengthened her entrepreneurial and business journey, equipping her with strategic insight and the confidence to lead decisively.

Zweli Tom (MBA, MScEng, MPhil, PrTechEng) shared his intentional pivot from a technical role into business management. His message to current students was clear: use this journey to build meaningful relationships. The network formed during an MBA is not transactional. It is enduring. These relationships become sounding boards, collaborators, and partners long into the future.

As a school, we believe leadership is both technical and relational. It is about competence, yes, but also about character, community, and courage. The stories shared last night reflected this deeply. Each alumnus demonstrated that the MBA is more than a qualification.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our alumni for returning to pour back into the school. Your stories embody our vision of shaping executive minds in Africa for meaningful impact. To our broader alumni community, we invite you to stay connected. Your voice matters. Your journey strengthens the collective.
